What does green building mean?Energy efficient kitchen

In 2016, green building, or sustainable building, has become a popular choice for homebuilders and commercial builders alike. The term green building refers to choosing environmentally responsible designs and resources from beginning to end of the building process. Everything from conception, to design, to construction is approached from an environmentally friendly and sustainable perspective.

What are some examples of green building materials?

When it comes to green building, siding, roof shingles, paint and even appliances are chosen specifically for their reduced impact on the environment. Technological advances have allowed us to really make sustainable and conscientious choices when it comes to the types of materials used in home building. More often than not, these green materials are similar in price to "normal" building materials, yet the environmental impact is minimal and you will save money in energy costs, long term.

Fiber-Cement Siding

Fiber-cement siding is a composite material made of sand, cement and cellulose fibers. It comes in a variety of colors and styles. Although it typically costs more than traditional vinyl siding, it can last for up to 25 years with little maintenance. Fiber-cement siding is resistant to fire, rain, wind, and insects like termites. It's also been around for almost 100 years, so it has more than proven its reliability.

Exterior Foam SheathingExterior Foam Sheathing

One of the most important energy-saving materials used in green building is insulation. The energy efficiency of insulation is measured by the R-value, so the higher the value, the better the efficiency. One of the best ways to increase the R-value of your exterior walls is to protect them with insulated foam sheathing. Not only does this improve energy efficiency, when combined with interior insulation, but it also provides moisture control.

Low-VOC Paint

Painting the interior of your home is often not thought of when researching green building. However, there are many chemicals in paint that can leave you feeling dizzy or light-headed, especially when your entire home is being painted. They diminish the quality of indoor air and can be detrimental to your health. Low-VOC paint is low odor and contains less volatile organic compounds (VOC's). Today, there are many manufacturers of products containing VOC's that are using alternative manufacturing techniques that dramatically reduce the use of these harmful compounds, or in some cases, eliminate them entirely.
